How is this speaking club different?

This type of speaking club known as 'The BIG FREE English Speaking Club" is a little different from the traditional-topic-based speaking club that you might have attended. But, how I hear you ask yourself....

There is no host directing the conversation and asking the questions, but don't worry, you will still be guided. You will join a room with 4 or 5 other people, and use the material on your screen to help guide your conversation among yourselves.

What is the topic? Well, the topic is called I think... and it's a chance for you to give your opinions on lots of different things like 'Are people who spend lots of money on clothes, crazy?" or "Should every country be visa free". This type of speaking club will allow you to have the opportunity to express your thoughts and opinions as well as the chance to provide examples to backup your opinions. We have included a file here with some useful language which can help with this up-coming online English conversation club. It's important you are ready to listen and accept that someone might have a different opinion than you, but don't worry none of the topics are considered taboo or controversial.

Before the topics start, you will have 5 minutes to introduce yourself and get to know the people in your room. Think about this before you arrive. Where you are from, where you are now, what you do (job/study), and a couple of hobbies or interests you have. The "I think" topics will change every 10-15 minutes, but if you are in a deep conversation about something, don't let the topic change stop you. Remember, you are there to speak and use your English, so try to give detailed answers, but also don't go into a super-duper-long monologue sending everyone the room asleep.

This speaking club will last for 60 minutes, but this doesn't mean you will be kicked off the call after 60 minutes, you will be allowed to stay and chat with the others who wish to stay in the main room.

Again it is very important that if you are going to join this speaking club, that you are ready to accept and respect that other people might disagree with you and have a completely different view on the topic you are talking about.

The next Big FREE English Speaking Club is on: 16th February Friday 5pm (London time)

This speaking club is open to anyone who is Intermediate and higher. You will try to be grouped with a similar level.

A few questions....

  • Where will the people be from?
It's impossible to say as we have people who sign up for the FREE speaking clubs from all over the world. From Kazakhstan to Brazil.
  • If I don't like it, can I leave?
Of course, if this type of speaking club is not your cup of tea, you are free to leave whenever you like.
  • Can I change rooms?
If you don't feel comfortable with the people in your room, just send the host a message and they will put you in a different room.
  • Can I be in the same room as my friend?
Who goes in which room will be completely random. You might end up in the same room as your friend, you might not, but come on, go and speak English to people you don't know. Make some new friends.

  • How do I sign up?
You can sign up for the BIG English speaking club here
  • Do I need to be on camera?
No. While it would be nice during the first session that we all say hello on camera, the sessions have all be designed so all our focus will be on the slides in front of us and our voices. Speaking and listening is our goal.
